Yes a colleague of mine who is with GSPE advises me the train is on its way
to Melbourne via "an inland" routing.

GSPE have been getting loadings between Brisbane and Cairns/Kuranda, that
are on target with their projections. However business between Sydney and
Melbourne has been slow as there is the perception regards length of journey
and perceived value for money.

One of the options GSPE is looking at is to travel Syd to Bris via the
Western Mainline over the Blue Mountains and then head north as part of
increasing the variety of scenery on the journey and giving "better value".
Passenger response from the current Melbourne trip running via the Western
Main is part of that.
