NR Push Pull Diesels

I read where National Rail are using NR class locos in Push-Pull operation
for their Hunter Valley [NSW] coal traffic.

Is the rear loco crewed?

What is the **economic** advantage of push pull with crew in both loco?  I
know the **engineering** advantage of extra locos scattered through the
wagon consist such as QR coal trains with remote radio controlled locos mid
train?
