leading letters:
A = 1st
B = 2nd
C = brakevan
D = bulk van
trailing letters started off having mnemonic value, but later became
arbitrary.
W: a series of short carriages, on four-wheel bogies.
E: a series of long carriages, on six-wheel bogies.
PL: a series of saloon excursion carriages (the P indicated a passageway
between seats, and was used on contemporary suburban carriages).
