Simply put, operating a SL is the same as putting a piece of metal from one
rail to the other, this shorts the section and puts all the signals protecting
moves over the points to the siding to stop. Of course crews must obtain
permission from whoever controls the track before operating a switch locked
siding. Once the switch lock is unlocked you can then operate the points into
the siding.

They work the same all over the world, the ones I've used in the US however did
not have the finger trigger, (a small difference in detail)
