In the suburban area where signal boxes were located close together and quite often
signals from two different boxes were on the same post, e.g. homes and distants, the
signal posts were numbered consecutively through a number of locations. In the
country, places like Ballarat and Bendigo had consecutively numbered signals but out
on the main lines at interlocked places each station had its own numbering starting
from 1. Mostly the number one was a signal at the Melbourne end but there was time
when signals were numbered the other way round. In fact so were signal boxes. Hey you
could write a book on this subject. It probably wouldn't interest DJohnson because he
thinks Victorian signalling is silly.
