Anybody know why sliding wheels have never been used, or even tried perhaps?
AFAIK, the (proposed) fancy/expensive Cairns-Perth pass. was to use this
technology to go from 1067 to 1435mm gauge.
(It saddens me deeply to stare down at dual gauge 1435/1600mm track, and to
realize the devasting cost and negative effect on the growth of rail
transportation that those seemingly trivial 6 1/2 inches have caused!)
