The last time I was up at Thirlmere, (about 5 years ago) I
discussed this very subject with Jim Martin, so the proposal has
been around for a very long time. Apart from the advantages of
ease of supply and handling of oil fuel, Jim also made the very
valid point that due to the ash pan design of the 35 class, it
was virtually impossible to "do the fire" without a pit and pits
are pretty rare items these days. This was his main argument in
favour of oil firing for the 35, as it was virtually impossible
to service a coal burning 35 class outside of Thirlmere depot.
