Re: Aus Railways loco brake systems

To fill in a little and perhaps encourage an HVR person to post:

WAGR narrow gauge steam and early diesel used vacuum train and loco brakes,
probably very similar to those on BR. SAR/SAS (South Africa) also did, so
when HVR was looking for coaches to use on their extensive program of
touring trains (WA's heritage fleet was not up to such intensive
utilisation), one major attarction of the South African cars was their being
vacuum fitted.

The A and AA classes (GM-EMD mechanicals and electrics, Clyde and ComEng
fabrication, now mostly with TraNZrail/TasRail) have air loco brakes (maybe
Chris French can help on the specifics here) but vacuum train brakes. Later
units are all air.
