The 57s and 58s were both 3 cylinder. The 58 was the newer and better (not)
version of the 57. The 57 had the centre valve gear operated by a Gresley
type conjugating gear, while on the 58 it was operated by a rack and pinion
system which continually needed adjusting. The 58 also had smaller cylinders
than the 57. I think the 58s would have been one of the shortest-lived
classes of steam loco in Australia (I'm sure I'll get corrected if I'm
wrong).
