I agree - this preoccupation with facing the direction of travel in Sydney
unbelievable - and I travel from Emu Plains to Chatswood almost daily, which
is a long journey (over 90 minutes) by suburban standards, and I will quite
often deliberately choose a backward facing seat, thus reducing the chance
of someone sitting next to me.

Not really irrelevant - if you know which direction the train (and therefore
the carriage) and you know the layout of the carriage, it is possible to
request specific compartments - I always request 33/34 - the one right at
the door, and has its own shower and toilet!
