Railways in the 21st century What is the future

What the future of railways in this country as we move to the 21 st
century. After reading some of the posting here it seem that the
governments around the country are hell bent on destroying it.

People will say that private operator are the only way railways are to
survive . Take the state of railways in Victoria it will take a lot of
money from private operators to get the railways back to a sound
position. Most private operates here apart from the big iron core
operations are really short haul operates as the Americans call then ,
none of them have any locos or rolling stock to offer effective rail
service. OK West Coast has rolling stock & locos but none of it is new
and most of it is " hand me down stuff " and only after costly & heavy
rebuilds that is equipment is returned to a serviceable condition but no
plans for new rolling stock or locos.

Yes private operators are talking about putting line between Alice
Springs and Darwin but this has been on the cards for the last 50 years
and the wet weather in the last couple of days may put it back in to moth
balls again .

So what the future for Railways in this country.

Cheers

  Keith
