Thanks for the background info on the UK franchises.
Do the franchisees have to pay any ongoing charges to BR or anyone else for 
the priveledge of running their trains.
Here is Aus all private rail operators have to pay a "Track Access Charge" 
which is differant in every state and secret for every train that they run.
Makes it very hard to work out the true economics of private rail operations.
