I must be pretty old because I can remember the Berala train accident
back in the 50', (I think). There were the old Bradfield wooden cars
on each 8 car set and I think 3 of them telescoped causing fatalaties
a long distance from the impact site. Yes they did absorbe the shock by
self destructing. The steel cars were deformed as well but kept their shape
fairly well where as the wooden ones were in a million splinters. Like a lot
of people after that demonstration of the dangers of wooden cars I never rode
in one again prefering to stand in steel rather than sit in a wooden coffin.
