Australian rail network notation

Hello,

I work in the UK and I'm after information on how the Australian rail
network is described by the rail industry.

For example, in the UK, we talk about routes, or ELR's. An ELR is usually
made of many tracks, and describe the route between two places, e.g. YMS =
York to Scarborough. We describe the distance along the route in miles and
yards.

I'd like to hear from anyone who can describe the way the rail industry
notates the Australian rail network. How do you specify a point along a
route, and how do you specify which track on that route you are on?

Please reply directly to my e-mail address rather than this newsgroup,

Many thanks for any replies,

Chris Goodwin
