Perhaps not related to your project but one of the reasons given for the
failure of the bridge was that the center supports, knocked out by the
derailed loco, were individual RSj's spaced a few feet apart. The
derailed train progressively knocked them out until the deck fell. A
consequence of this that all open girder support bridges were to be
filled with concrete to prevent a similar occurrence. The argument being
that a solid block of girders and concrete will not be knocked out.
Victoria immediately set about doing the cementing and a close look at
many bridges shows evidence of recently poored concrete almost to the
top of center piers. Surprisingly I noticed when in Sydney a few years
ago that bridges of this type still exit. Why was the program not
completed in NSW or has it been by know.
