I don't think that you could call 10 year old railcars 'junk'. I would agree
that the older ADK cars could be called so as although they considerably
better than the ADG, ADH and ADX cars that preceded them, they did suffer from
excessive wheelslip due to driving on one axle only of each bogie.
The newer ADL cars were much better although they were rather noisy if you
happened to be riding near the auxiluary diesel generator. these cars drove on
all wheels and so had better performance. As I never did work for Westrail, I
cannot comment on their reliability.
