Minister for Transport and Main Roads, HON. V. G. JOHNSON

10/2/98

RAIL CONTRACTS BOOST IPSWICH INDUSTRY

Transport and Main Roads Minister Vaughan Johnson and National Party endorsed candidate for the seat of Ipswich West announced today that ANI Corporation Limited at Karrabin near Ipswich would supply the State Government with 700 wagons worth $60 million.

Mr Johnson said the announcement was a component of one of Queensland Rail's biggest ever orders for $420 million of rolling stock.

"The new rolling stock will be delivered progressively over the next three to four years, and is expected to provide a major boost to Queensland's manufacturing industry," said Mr Johnson.

He said that a total of 1,270 coal wagons would be supplied by three private sector companies, with an additional 500 wagons to be manufactured by QR's Redbank Workshops.

Under a separate contract, ANI will also manufacture 3,560 bogies for $77 million at its Runcorn foundry.

National Party endorsed candidate Mrs Wykes said that Ipswich industry was continuing to play an important role in equipping Queensland Rail to meet the demands of the export coal industry.

"Queensland Rail is midway through a 10-year $6 billion investment program which is not only creating a modern, competitive transport network for Queensland but also business and employment opportunities throughout the State," Mr Johnson said.

Other contracts approved include:

Evans Deakin Engineering in Brisbane, which will supply 350 wagons at a cost of over $32 million;
Clyde Engineering at Maryborough, which will supply 38 diesel-electric locomotives worth $132 million, and which will see the most powerful 120-tonne narrow gauge diesel-electric locomotives in the world operating on Queensland's non-electric coal lines; and
Goninan North Queensland Pty Ltd, which is finalising details with QR to manufacture 220 coal wagons worth approximately $20 million.

"Queensland Rail's massive investment program in its heavy-haul network is helping Queensland's coal industry to remain internationally competitive," Mr Johnson said.

He said that the new 104-tonne coal wagons would replace older, lower-capacity wagons, and would allow Queensland Rail trains to carry 9,600 tonnes of coal from mine to port.

"This will help QR to meet the growing needs of its export coal markets and achieve world's best practice for its heavy haulage operations.

"Coal is Queensland's largest export earner with $5 billion annual revenue, and QR is playing a key role in helping the industry to maintain its competitive edge on world markets," Mr Johnson said.
