Isn't this a circular argument? ie, In order to exit if you have
forgotten to validate your ticket, you need to exit, put it in the
entrance unit, then put it in the exit unit.

This is correct but what my question related more to is:
what if you have prepurchased some Metcards from your local station,
travelled to work on a 2hr ticket, then used your second still
unvalidated 2hr ticket to catch the non-Metcard tram to the station to
catch the train home to your Metcard area. This question isn't as
pedantic as it sounds as you may be leaving the city to a different
destination as you went to the city from (eg I might catch the train
from Greensborough, Zone 2 but catch the train back to Preston in the
evening and get a ride home with my mother who works there. Therefore,
2x2hr tickets for different zones would be cheaper.) Or there is a
chance I might get a ride home with a fellow employee therefore I would
purchase 2x2hr tickets in case it fell through and I would have a spare
to get home again.

As another issue I just thought of, will the PTC still offer 2hr
tickets with a 10% discount if bought in bulk as they did with scratch
tickets?
