Your question comes at a good time. The greedy developers are at it
again, just this week again in the news wanting the line cut back to
Broadmeadow. The problem is that the railway spoils their plans to build
more hi rise overlooking the harbour. This issue has gone on for many
years now. Just recently I was reading a 1974 issue of Railway Digest and
the very same thing was being proposed. Some of these wackers even want
to put in a light rail line to replace the existing heavy rail. Luckily
the council is opposed to all of this but there is another argument going
on over Newcastle Station. The former platform 5 is to become a bus
interchange and State Transit want to make it a lay over area to replace
Parnell Place , which was sold by former Minister Baird. Since the sale
of Parnell Place , STA have leased back the site and the lease payments
have now exceeded the price of the original sale. Now the landlords want
the STA out and the problem of finding a new layover is a real problem.
