It is what we now call a Delicatessen due to the influx of people
from Southern Europe after WWII. It is operated by a family so I
guess "Mom and Pop" grocery store would describe it well enough.

The Kiwi's call it a Dairy but from my observation there are not a lot
of cows there.

A Milk Bar layout in a carriage (as in the Milk Bar Model 75 railcars
of the old SAR) had seating like some cafe's of the 1940's and 1950's.
Seats facing with high backs (over head height) so they formed open
ended compartments each side of a centre aisle.
