But I reckon the inspectors would give two shits about it when the
"settling in period" is over. I believe that on the East Burwood line many
people thought the whole system was great for a free ride until they
started getting fined. Now they all seem very conscientous when I have
ridden that line.

It is good that they are giving people the benefit of the doubt for a few
months after the introduction of the system, but it seems a shame that most
people will just treat it as an excuse not to pay, and will then get upset
when the benefit of the doubt is removed.

After all, you could have used your argument in the past. i.e. get on a
tram and say to the conductor "I want to buy a weekly ticket. Oh, you don't
sell one, well then I won't buy another ticket because you can't sell me
what I want". I have seen people try it, and they weren't allowed to get
away with it by the conductor.
