Getting way off topic here, but splitting trains is certainly not a
new idea. In about 1970 I rode the CPH down from Moss Vale to
Wollongong, changed to an up pass and claimed a seat in the rear car.
Sensible really, as the rail motor arrived on the same platform as the
pass, running up behind it.

At Thirroul we stopped, and as the other passengers in the car
detrained, one of them said "if you're going to Sydney, you'll have to
move forward ... the train leaves lots of carriages here". Sure
enough, the train resumed its journey with about half the cars.

And I am convinced there was no announcement at all.
