Alice Springs Council demands new Darwin line bypasses Town.

The Alice Springs Council has taken on the Northern
Territory Government with the proposed Alice Springs to
Darwin rail link, by stating that it will oppose the
present plan to have the railway extended from the
present terminal.

The Council has a consultants report which claims the
cost of routing the line East of Alice Springs will not
cost "much more" than the present proposal.

The Council claims, "it does not want goods trains
thundering through the town day and night."!!

NT Railway minister, Barry Coulter has served a
broadside at the Council, saying their proposal will
jeopardise the whole project.

The consultants report has not yet been made public.
