Many years ago, Keith Dunstan wrote an article on this. From memory I think he
said the first reference to Doggies that he could find in The Sun was in the
early 60's. I'm not sure if the press started the term and railfans copied or
if the press heard railfans talking about "Doggies"

Nowadays it seems many people call "any old train" a dogbox. Perhaps the
provision of a real dogbox on Z and C guards vans had something to do with the
term.
