They originaly had a red screen with LEDs behind them, in the shape of arrows and were used to advise passengers that the doors were
released so they could press the doors open button. The also advised the passengers that the doors were closing. ie

<< >> doors may be opened

>> << doors closing.

This was too much for stupid passengers so they were disconnected when the auto doors were modified.
