1949 isn't that old for a rail- 2km further down the track on the
Picton-Mittagong loopline around Picton curve there are several rails dating
from around 1893. These rails at one stage used to be in Sydney yard and were
laid in their present site with the 1919 deviation of the Main Southern Line.
However there is a 20km caution board around this corner!

I doubt it. There rails at Picton station are on a relatively straight peice
of track- wear shouldn't be a problem- though there is a bit of "cold flow".
In any case the XPT already does 70-80km/h though there and there is no way
that they could make it up to 130km through Picton with the Picton and Maldon
curves at either end of this track, as well the grade on the down across the
viaduct is 1 in 40.
