Most people seem to forget the following:

A bus pays a fee to use the nation's roads once a year. The more trips they can
do in a year, the higher the income. For example, If it takes 50 trips to break
even, any further trips start making profits.

A train pays a fee to use the nations rails for every trip, based on tonnage.
The more trips they do, the more it costs. Shortening the trains and running
more of them will make the costs higher than running one train.
