A Train Order is a message from the Train Controller (Dispatcher to the
yanks) to the crew of a train to go from point a to point b passing
(overtaking) or crossing (meeting trains travelling in the opposite
direction) various trains in the process. This obviates the necessity to
carry a token as authority to traverse the single line section. Train Orders
have been the norm in Nth America since safeworking was deemed to be
necessary. The poms and us went to token working. Prior to that, reliance on
the timetable was the general method.
Does anyone know what methods are used for single lines outside the English
speaking world?
