D stands for a car fitted with driver's cab, but with no motors. When 2
car sets were common, the usual practice was a D & C car marshalled
together. Many D cars had their cabs removed and were converted to T cars.
They wouldn't be equipped with a pantograph.

C stands for 'control' car - these cars have both motors and driving
compartments.

N stands for non-control car - these have motors but no driving
compartments.

T is for trailer, no motors or driving compartments.
