As someone who works in the pre-press/printing industry full-time, as a
Graphic Designer, MAC Operator, Camera Operator, Proofer and Scanner
Operator.....etc., and someone who does a fair amount of stuff at home, the
obvious question is what degree of quality do you want???
My general recommendation for the home-user is any HP or PROSCAN product
that is both a Reflective and Trannie Scanner or at least has a Trannie
Adapter easily fitted. We use both at work, but only as 'Low-Res' tools to
aid the 'Hi-Res' positionals scanned from the commercial DRUM Scanner
(excuse the tech. jarg.)
What is often overlooked is the value of 'high end' software such as
'Photoshop'. This can be the difference between a 'Good' scan and...well.
The Web-site guys in the US (cheaper there??) all seem to be using these
products as well, but they're doing it at home (yeh, cheaper!!).
>From a professional point of view, and as an Aus railway photographer, at
home; in realistic Aus $, you are probably looking at $4k to try and even
approach the quality the US guys display on their Web-Sites.
I won't go into their photographic ability, however: :~)
As a matter of interest, check the US Trainorders/Webcam Site (sic) as there
is now an 'Aus' category in the 'Trade' section.
<htttp//www.trainorders.com>
And, yes it was hard won!! So put some Aus pics there!!
BTW, within limitations, I am prepared to scan pics at work (in my own time)
at a cost that will at least cover my time and effort, in some way. But,
please, keep it Aus railways.
This is in no way, a commercial effort. But simply, I am a Aus railway
enthusiast.
