Many cities use the timed ticket approach. It is, as you say, by far the best
solution, because anyone setting out on public transport wants to reach a
destination rathert than ride on the vehicles of the X, Y or Z transit company.

Once it's understood that transit operators are actually selling destinations,
not rides, the planning of fare systems should become easier.

But with some transit agencies it is an article of religious faith to try to
charge separately for every kilometre travelled, and demand that new
tickets be bought for every change of vehicle. That attitude has killed or
damaged more public transport systems than any amount of private car
lobbies.

a day, or three days, or a week, or a month, or a year, and all of them
are valid on anything that's public transport)
