Where the crash occurred the train would have been travelling due east on a
long slightly downhill dead straight section,so that if the sun behind a
signal was the problem it would also have been a problem for 3 or even 10
signals.Since presumably the 2nd person also missed seeing the 3 signals or
how many there were,its not an unreasonable theory.
At least the old upper semaphores have an advantage over lights in this regard.
