Illawarra (NSW) on Sundays

Is the Illawarra used as a driver training ground on Sundays?

Two Sundays ago we had a train with "Train Under Test" on the destination
sign behaving a bit oddly.

Yesterday on a trip to Sydney it was easier to consider the stations we
*didn't* overshoot. At Bulli and others the first carriage was completely
past the station and at Coal Cliff the front two were beyond the station.

For awhile I was wondering if it had anything to do with the large black
4, 6 and 8 digits which appear on what looks like a big laminated sheet,
often attached to station fences and often appear well beyond the end of
platforms, (Does anyone know what these are BTW? They are in addition to
the usual numbers painted on platforms), however we even missed Hurstville
by more than a whole carriage.

Another weird thing was that we started pulling out of Scarborough
normally but almost immeadiately stopped again (within about 5m) and
didn't move for 5 minutes. No sign of any other train traffic or people
working on or near the tracks...

Any ideas anyone?
