Last time I travelled on the Overland it had a luggage van similar to the old
Aurora MHN type on the front between the loco and the 1st car.
It was the same in both directions , I presume the train always has some sort
of luggage van on it .
An MHN weighs 46 tonnes , and & PHN is only 52 tonnes, HGMs are a bit heavier
at 66 tonnes, but if the train has to have some sort of luggage van on it it
may as well be a power van of some sort and you can use a normal loco.
ELs would be the logical choice for all the Pass trains.
Did G & W actually get to own the ELs & ANs ?

cheers
