First we better decide what the trains really do. Trains from Burnley in the
morning go direct to Flinders Street then to North Melbourne and out on those
lines so there aren't any trains from Burnley going into the city loop in the
morning. Trains from North Melbourne go around the city loop twice in a
clockwise direction in the morning first through Plat 3 in the city loop to
Flinders Street then plat 4 to Burnley.

In the afternoon it is the opposite i.e. trains from burnley go twice around the
loop to North Melbourne and trains from North Melbourne go Direct to Flinders
Street and then Richmond and do not go through the loop at all.

The reason for the loop direction change is the sharing of the tracks with the
Caulfield lines between RICHMOND JUNCTION and Flinders Street. The trains have
to take a different path into the city this is more than just closing plat 2+3
but the Burnley through and Local lines as well to realign them for JRP.

This is what I have all ready posted to this newsgroup:

During the morning peek Belgrave/Lilydale trains use the Caulfield up lines to
FS (which are not use by trains from Caulfield because they use the loop) and
Belgrave/Lilydale down trains use the Burnley loop as Caulfield trains use the
down lines from FS. The opposite in the afternoon. If you left the loop going
the same direction then you would have all Caulfield trains and
Belgrave/Lilydale trains using the same tracks going the same way and there
would be too much congestion.

Hope this helps
