In Melbourne you don't need to join the tracks but the section before and after the isolator on the tracks. ie a 20 cent peice will trigger the corssing circuit but soon as it is taken away will stop the circuit because the next one won't have been triggered in time.

As they upgrade the signalls in Melbourne the signalls have to be set in order so you would need to run up the track triggering each circuit to get the gates to work. This stops people triggering them off.

I don't know how far they would get with charging you with doing it (I am not saying to go and try) but you ant making anything not safe. But you are tresspassing by going on to the tracks. They would slap you on hte rists and let you go.

P.S in Melbourne for the Express train they crossing will set early if the train didn't stop at the previous station. That is only when there is a station just before the crossing, otherwise the gatesdon't care if the train stops at the station or not.
