BHP Coal who now run the BHP collieries in the Illawarra are looking at
ways of cutting their coal production and shipping costs. One of the
options is to stop transporting coal by rail from Elouera Colliery
(Wongawilli line) and O'Brien's Drift (Kemira Valley line). The
transport would then be contracted to local road hauliers. At present no
decisions have been made but, if it does happen, that would be the end
of the Austrac locos, the K class, and D34 as all these locos are paid
for by BHP Coal specifically for the coal transport. So if you want
photos of these locos and trains on these two lines you better come soon
otherwise you could be too late.
