They were good engines despite their age, they only needed refitting with
better soundproofing and crew mods etc. The on track maintenance was only
ever adequate, but they benefitted from regular overhauls at the now closed
Midland Workshops. They would come out of there like brand new engines, and
so really started their life again, I suppose. Some engines would go 6
months without dynamic, as Westrail said the grids could not be found
anywhere. But the spare parts problem aside, you could keep them going
forever.
