Peter Barry, at an ARE quiz, used a good definition: a line has
safeworking; a siding doesn't.
Some of the interesting ones:
* The various wharf lines & sidings (Webb Dock, West Melbourne Piggott
St, Appleton Dock, Swanson Dock, Maribyrnong River, Spotsood oil)
* Defence Deparment lines (South Kensington, Munistore, Albistore,
Broadstore).
* Newport Powerhouse.
* Williamstown Pier.
* Williamstown Racecourse.
* The sidings west from Brooklyn.
* ICI, Deer Park.
* Ravenhall explosives siding (Deer Park).
* Albion Reid, Deer Park west.
* Upfield - Somerton.
* Inner Circle and Fitzroy.
* Outer Circle.
* Mont Park,
* Kew.
* Springvale Cemetery.
* Westall sidings.
* Comeng at Dandenong, and ACI sand siding.
* Various sand sidings at/near Cranbourne.
* Rosstown Railway.
* St Kilda - Windsor.
* Princes Pier.
* Flinders St before the viaduct.
Most have been written up in ARHS Bulletin, DD/Newsrail, and tour notes.
I am always surprised how many of these were electrified, and how many
had passenger services.
I have a very interesting book, London't local railways; I have always
wanted to produce something similar for Melbourne. It would include
Newport - Sunshine and Flemington Racecourse too.
