Flinders Street Yards

Does anyone recall what the purpose of a large (thre of four stories
high) grey building was in the Flinders Street yards. It looked like a
giant transformer out of a 1930's science fiction film. It was one the
spookiest-looking buildings I've ever seen. I don't recall when it
disappeared. It was certainly there in there in the 1970's.
