The height of switchstands is usually dictated by how far the switchstand
needs to be seen. For instance, a SS for a mainline switch is usually tall
so it can be seen at speed from a distance. A SS for a insignificant
switch in a yard where everything is moving at slow speed can be a small
SS because you don't need to see it from afar.
