I spoke to a number of SRV members, none of whom seemed to intimate
that #658 was a short-term project, and that a return to #639 was
planned. Even an ex-Board member on this newsgroup seems a little
hazy on the future plans for 639/658.

Anyway, the original question was why it was see-sawing b/w 658 and
639, seemingly from trip to trip (well, not quite!). I suppose with
only one D3 in service, the legal/insurance issues of accurate
identification don't come into play (unlike our cars where we can't
decide to put the personalised plates on for the weekend <g!>).

Perhaps if more were better informed, more would be motivated to join!

BTW, was 639 Canadian Red while in service? I've just been told that
even in its role as Commissioners' engine (until supplanted by Y175),
it was black with polished/chromed number plates. My source thought
that it was red last in the 1920's. Do you know the real story?
