One of Australia's oldest surviving electric trams is to operate over
the Sydney light Rail. SLR has hired scrubber car 134S (formerly D
class California combination car no. 102 built in 1899) from the Sydney
Tramway Museum to operate over the new system prior to its official
opening.

134S is returning to familiar territory as it was based at Ultimo depot
until November 1924 carrying passengers on the Pyrmont and Railway
Colonnade services. After ceasing to operate as a passenger car this
historic vehicle was converted to a special purpose rail scrubber and
continued to operate in this mode until the closure of the Sydney
tramways in 1961.

134S has been fitted with additional equipment to operate at the light
rail voltage of 750 volts in lieu of the tramways 600 volts and equipped
with a spare pantograph from one of the Museum's Berlin trams in place
of the familiar trolley pole to enable it to operate under the SLR's
rather unique overhead.

134S has been used previously in Sydney to scrub the Eastern Suburbs
Railway in 1978 and 1979 before this line opened and also on the
Sutherland-Cronulla rail line in 1983 after this line was re-railed.
