Speaking as an ex VR driver, the term points is used far more, in fact in
Vic, the term turnout is not used much at all, the term crossover is also
used. (Of course a crossover is actually 2 sets of points.)

Strictly speaking the word "points" only refers to the point blades.

SAR used the term "switch" to describe points.

NSW used to have a description along the lines of,
"When the upper yellow functions,
beware of turnouts points and junctions!"
So I guess they used both terms.
BTW, could someone from NSW post the real quotation from the rule book?
