A media report today on ABC Territory Radio stated that
the Federal Transport Minister has been assured that
the rival plan for a Railway from Melbourne to Darwin
will not need Commonwealth assistance so it will not
effect his consideration of the Alice to Darwin plan.

The Federal Minister for Transport John Sharp also said
in Alice Springs today and I quote,

"We are much more comfortable if you like with the
Alice Springs to Darwin proposal simply because we know
a lot more about it and because its the proposal that
in a sense goes to the whole purpose of celebrating the
Centenary of our Federation, that is to connect Darwin
to the rest of our Rail System and connect it to
Australia."

Cheers
