I know this discussion is getting a bit old, but The Age article of 15/5
was raised again, but funnily enough, the following was not raised....
On 9/7/97, page A2, The Age printed:
WE WERE WRONG
A report published on Thursday 15 May, headlined "Country rail sale no
cash windfall" referred to West Coast Railway receiving, from September
1993 until February 1997, $20.3 million in Government subsidies. This
is incorrect. West Coast Railways received $3.5 million in subsidies
during that period and was paid $16.8 million for services. The Age
apologises for any embarrassment caused
***end of article.
As I said very early in the piece, the original Age article was
factually incorrect, and action was taken by WCR against them, and hence
their correction. If you *read* the Auditor General's report, with
something resembling a balanced viewpoint, and more importantly, if you
understand what the A-G *does* say (as opposed to quoting the figures in
the report, and applying them to support what he *does not* say) you'll
see there really is nothing to jump up and down about with regards to
WCR's operations.
Regards,
Craig.
