Pintsch Gas was manufacured by heating heavy oil in a reaction vessel. The
gas was then stored in a water seal gas holder. A compressor was then used
to fill the fixed gas reservoirs on the gas lit vehicles. The VR also had a
Pintsch Gas wagon which was used to convey the gas to country carriage
depots; these depots had a fixed tank to store the gas. The works was at
the Dudley Street carriage sidings and there was a low pressure pipeline to
Flinders Street yard, which also had a gas holder and compressor. Pintsch
Gas was used up until the 1960's mainly with the PL type country cars
although the G suburban cars had dual lighting for use on the
non-electrified Werribee and Healesville lines.
