I assume that there are physical and economic reasons for going around rather than across. There's certainly no difference in time between Adelaide and Sydney using either route. I assume there are more physical restrictions going via the Blue Mountains. Also, I heard that Victoria charges a flat flag-fall rate for track access whereas SRA have a different system. So perhaps there's an economic advantage by minimising access to SRA controlled track.
