The article in BRW is the only one I have read in full. It did mention gas
turbines.

Gas turbines have been suggested on and off for years. Considering the
size of Australia's natural gas reserves, it's not such a silly idea. I
think the most recent proposal was an experiment using the demotored 421.

Gas turbine seems more logical than the proposed 12,000hp steam loco.
