I would suggest Islington or Whyalla.

NR would not take the loco off en-route. It would be needed Murray
Bridge
to Mt Lofty in any case. They do add locos at Tailem Bend for this
purpose
if required (and drop them on the eastbound trip).

I don't know whether this train calls at Islington, but this would be a
crew change point for the crew on at Dimboola.

A number of NR trains of late have had G class on them. But
increasingly
the NR class are taking over and leading into Victoria.
